DATE: MAY 29 TO 30, 2025
Maritime decarbonization is a global challenge that demands urgent action and strategic collaboration.
In this context, MTCC Latin America, under the framework of the GMN Phase II Project implemented by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and funded by the European Union, in collaboration with UMIP and the Directorate General of Merchant Marine of Honduras, held the First National Workshop on May 29–30, 2025, in San Pedro Sula, Honduras.
The workshop brought together national and international experts, government representatives, industry leaders, academia, and environmental organizations to share innovative strategies and practical solutions to drive the energy transition toward more sustainable, low-emission maritime transport.
Key topics addressed:
Exploring innovative strategies to reduce GHG emissions in line with global climate goals
Advancing the decarbonization of maritime transport in Honduras through practical energy efficiency technological solutions
Financing opportunities for sustainable projects
Promoting gender equality in maritime energy efficiency initiatives
We had the valuable participation of the European Union, presenting the Global Gateway program, supporting Latin America in promoting connectivity, sustainability, and development in the digital, energy, and transport sectors. The challenges and opportunities of the maritime and port sector were then analyzed, with preliminary mapping carried out to develop a roadmap for maritime decarbonization in Honduras.
Regional initiatives in maritime education, green shipping corridors, and green ports, within the framework of the Regional Industry Alliance for Latin America (RIALA), were presented as development opportunities for Honduras and the region at large. A technical visit was also conducted to Puerto Cortés to identify concrete opportunities for improving energy efficiency at the ship-port interface.
The workshop included a practical session on marine fuel life cycle assessment, analyzing GHG emissions from well to tank and from tank to wake, and concluded with a high-level panel that identified viable strategies to enhance women's participation in decarbonization efforts through a Gender Action Plan.
This National Workshop in Honduras represents a significant step forward in promoting sustainable maritime transport and achieving regional decarbonization goals, fostering collaboration and knowledge sharing among all stakeholders.
We thank the Directorate General of the Merchant Marine for its support, as well as all the participants, moderators, panelists, and speakers who shared their experiences and knowledge, contributing to the success of this workshop and taking a step toward maritime sustainability in the region.
